Frequently asked questions about Granos de trigo

Where can I buy wheat berries in bulk?

Right here. We sell eight kinds of wheat berries online in 5, 10, 25 and 50 lb bags: organic soft white, hard white and hard red; Wheat Montana Bronze Chief, Prairie Gold and hard red winter; plus conventional soft white and hard red spring. Standard shipping is free on orders over $99 to the lower 48 states, with no surcharge for heavy 50 lb bags. Start with our organic hard red wheat berries.

Do you sell organic wheat berries?

Yes. We stock three organic wheat berries: organic soft white (5, 25 and 50 lb), organic hard white (5 and 25 lb) and organic hard red (5 and 25 lb). Our Wheat Montana berries and our conventional soft white and hard red spring berries aren't organic, but they are non-GMO. Bronze Chief and Prairie Gold are also labeled Certified Glyphosate Free. Shop organic soft white wheat berries.

How do you cook wheat berries?

Cook them like pasta. Rinse 1 cup of wheat berries, add 3 to 4 cups of water, bring to a boil and simmer until tender but still chewy, then drain. Soft white berries cook faster than hard red: start checking soft wheat at about 30 minutes and hard wheat at 45 to 50, and allow up to 90 minutes. Soaking overnight shortens the time. Cooked berries are great in salads, soups and grain bowls.

Do you carry Wheat Montana wheat berries?

Yes. We carry three Wheat Montana wheats: Bronze Chief, a high-protein hard red spring wheat (10 and 50 lb); Prairie Gold, a hard white spring wheat (10 and 50 lb); and hard red winter wheat (5 and 50 lb). Bronze Chief and Prairie Gold are labeled Certified Glyphosate Free and Non-GMO, and both are also sold as ready-milled whole wheat flour. Shop Bronze Chief wheat berries.

Can I mill wheat berries into flour at home?

Yes, with a grain mill. We sell NutriMill grain mills, including the Classic, Impact and Harvest models. Mill only what you need for a recipe, since fresh whole wheat flour keeps best cold, and store the unmilled berries sealed, cool and dry. New to milling? Our Mill Your Own Flour Organic Grain Starter Kit bundles 5 lb each of seven organic grains, including hard red, hard white and soft white wheat. See the starter kit.

How much flour does a pound of wheat berries make?

About one pound. Milling changes the grain's volume, not its weight. By volume, a pound of wheat berries usually makes roughly 3½ to 4½ cups of flour, depending on the wheat, how fine you grind and whether you sift. Weighing is the most accurate way to measure. Home millers baking every week often buy hard red, hard white or soft white berries in 25 or 50 lb bags.
